Second phase of polling underway in J&K, Jharkhand amid tight security

Polling is underway for the second phase of five-phased assembly elections in Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir. In Jharkhand, about 16.32 per cent turnout was recorded in the first two hours of voting. Polling for twenty Assembly constituencies across seven Maoist-hit districts in the State is underway in the second phase. An election official said, barring the replacement of a defective electronic voting machine (EVM) at one of the booths in the Jaganathpur assembly constituency, polling was going on smoothly and peacefully. Amid tight security, polling began at 7 AM.

Moderate polling was recorded in the nine constituencies of the Kashmir Valley which went to polls in the second of phase Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir. Nearly five per cent voter turnout was recorded in the first one hour. Polling was by and large peaceful. Large queues of voters could be seen at polling stations. According to official figures, Lolab Assembly segment recorded the highest turnout of 10.5 per cent in the first hour of polling.
