SEBI to fix strict enforcement timelines, focus on refund

In order to rein in defaulters and safeguard investors' interests, capital markets regulator, SEBI has decided to fix strict time lines for completing its enforcement actions, and ensure fast-track refund of money collected fraudulently from investors. Outlining its action plan for the current fiscal, SEBI said it has begun focusing on developing capabilities to effectively utilise the additional enforcement powers given to it by the government last year. It said recovering unpaid penalties and filing criminal prosecution before special courts will improve the quality of enforcement actions initiated by the regulator. Under the new powers vested with it, SEBI can pass orders for attachment and freezing of assets and arresting defaulters, and initiate recovery procedures. It can also pass orders to ensure refund of money to investors.
