SC’s No to Kerala for PM’s intervention in Mullaperiyar dam row

The Supreme Court has refrained from making an appeal to the Prime Minister for his intervention to solve the vexed Mullaiperiyar dam row as sought by Kerala Government. The Court said the Prime Minister is the most suitable authority to hammer out a solution to the vexed problem but refrains from doing so after Tamil Nadu objected to it.

Tamil Nadu objected to it on the ground that the apex court-appointed empowered committee's report is awaited.

A five-judge Constitution Bench of the court, however, recorded an affidavit from Kerala that it will take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of Mullaiperiyar dam, other installations and properties of Tamil Nadu in the state from any form of vandalism.

Centre's senior counsel Ashok Bhan also assured the apex court that central forces including the Central Industrial Security Forces can be deployed at the dam site provided the state of Kerala granted permission or if there is any order from the bench to the effect.

Following the assurances from the Kerala government, the apex court found no reason to interfere with the application moved by Tamil Nadu for deployment of Central security forces at the dam side.

Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Assembly on Thursday passed a Unanimous resolution reasserting the state's right over the 116-year old dam, which Kerala wants to be decommissioned to build a new one on safety concerns. The resolution said that under no circumstances would the state give up its rights over the Mullaiperiyar Dam. Chief Minister Jayalalitha accused Kerala of adopting deceiving tactics on the issue.
