BJP today said the Supreme Court's decision declaring the National Judicial Appointment Commission, NJAC, Act as unconstitutional is a setback to sovereignty of Parliament. Briefing reporters in New Delhi, senior party leader Ravi Shankar said the Act was passed after long consultations and discussions of 20 years and all political parties had unanimously supported it in Parliament. He said 20 state legislatures have also unanimously accorded their approval.<br/><br/>Giving the background of the formation of NJAC, Mr. Prasad, who had piloted the Bill as Law Minister, said that Judicial Reforms Commission, Administrative Reforms Commission and Law Commission had stressed on the need of NJAC seeing the lacuna in the collegiums system.<br/><br/>Maintaining that government does not believe in confrontation with Judiciary, Mr. Prasad said the Centre is fully committed to independence of judiciary. He said the BJP and the government would give a structured reply after going through the judgment of the Apex Court.
