In West Bengal, the Alipur Court in South 24 pargana district on Tuesday released scientist Partha Sarathi Ray on bail who was arrested by the Kolkata police for his alleged role in protest against the recent eviction of slum dwellers in city’s Nonadanga area. Earlier, a group of social activists and scientists including National Advisiory Council Member, Ms. Aruna Roy and noted Philosopher Noam Chomskay sought the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh’s intervention for his release. In a letter to the Prime Minister they said, the police used force in a peaceful demonstration by the concerned citizens against the massive eviction drive of slum dwellers by the West Bengal Government without any rehabilitation measures.Mr. Partha Sarathi Ray is a molecular biologist of the Indian Institute of Research in Kolkata and was arrested along with 68 other protesters on the 8th of this month.
