In Kerala, the death toll in the school van accident at Channankara near Thiruvananthapuram rose to four with a five-year-old child succumbing to injuries today. Preliminary investigations have found that the vehicle that plunged into a canal was driven by its cleaner, who did not possess a license. Three children had died yesterday when the van carrying 25 primary school students fell into a canal at Channankara.Kerala government had announced a solatium of Rs 5 lakh rupees each for the families of the deceased children and decided to bear entire expenses of the children receiving treatment for injuries suffered during the mishap.Nearly 15 children are still undergoing treatment. Police have registered a case on the accident against the cleaner, the driver and the school management.
