Scheme in place to fight child labour: Govt

The Government says a multi-pronged strategy is in place to tackle the problem of Child Labour in the country. In a message on the occassion of World Day against Child Labour, Minister of Labour and Employment Mallikarjun Kharge said the Government's initiative to make Right to Education a Fundamental Right for Children is an important step forward. He urged all the nations to come together and help in eliminating child labour .<br/><br/>At a function in New Delhi, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) and UNICEF have called upon the corporate houses to help in realisation of Right to Education. They described caste inequality prevailing in the country as the biggest hindrance in achievement of this goal. According to latest reports, almost 50 per cent of the students drop out of schools after class VIII.<br/><br/>Various functions are being organised across the globe today to observe the day to promote awareness and action to tackle child labour. The theme for 2010 is ‘Go For the Goal…End Child Labour’. The International Labour Organisation (ILO) launched the first World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 to highlight the plight of children engaged in work that deprives them of adequate education, health, leisure and basic freedoms and violating their rights.
