The Supreme Court has upheld the conviction and life imprisonment awarded to Manu Sharma in the 1999 Jessica Lall murder case. Upholding the Delhi High Court verdict, a Bench of the apex court on Monday said that the prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt the presence of Manu Sharma at the site of the offence.

The bench said the Delhi High Court has given cogent and adequate reasons for reversal of acquittal given by the trial court. Manu Sharma is the son of senior Congress leader and former Union Minister Venod Sharma.

The apex court also upheld the conviction as well as sentence of four years jail term of Vikas Yadav, son of Uttar Pradesh politician D P Yadav and, Amarjeet Singh Gill, an MNC executive, for the destruction of evidence.

Though the apex court criticised the media for its reports in connection with the case while it was pending before the high court, the Supreme Court judges said it did not cause any prejudice to the accused.

Sabrina Lall, sister of the slain model-cum-bartender Jessica Lall, who has been pursuing the case expressed her happiness over the verdict. She said outside the court that the final door has been closed on this episode. She said it has given a lot of relief and satisfaction.

Jessica was shot dead by Manu at the Tamarind Court Cafe restaurant owned by socialite Bina Ramani at Qutub Colonnade in South Delhi in 1999.
