The Supreme Court has upheld the decision of Agartala bench of Gauhati High Court regarding acquittal of 14 accused persons convicted for life imprisonment in connection with the brutal killing of 13 persons, during a clash between CPI-M and Congress at Birchandramanu in South district of Tripura. <br/><br/>Two policemen were among the dead. The incident took place on October 12, 1988. The trial court of Additional Session Judge of South Tripura had sentenced 14 of 25 accused imprisonment for life with fine in 1999 for the incident.<br/><br/>However, the accused appealed the High Court against the judgement and were acquitted from the charge of murder saying that the murder happened following provocation and political instigation. The state government had moved to the apex court against the High Court order.
