SC to hear Yakub Memon's curative petition today

The Supreme Court will today hear the curative petition filed by 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts convict and death row convict Yakub Memon. 53 years old Yakub, who is lodged in the Nagpur central jail, has been sentenced to death in the March 12, 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case. He is the brother of chief conspirator Tiger Memon, a close aide of Pakistan-based gangster Dawood Ibrahim. On July 27th, 2007, Memon was sentenced to death by Justice (Retd) P D Kode, who was then the special judge of the court set up under Terrorists and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act in Mumbai. His sentence was upheld by a Supreme Court bench headed by then Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan on March 21st, 2013. On April 9th this year, a three-member bench headed by Justice A R Dave rejected the review plea of Yakub. President Pranab Mukherjee had also rejected his mercy petition.

If the curative petition is rejected, Yakub is likely to be hanged on July 30 in Nagpur Central Jail, where he is currently lodged. A qualified Chartered Accountant, Yakub Memon, was nailed for his role in arranging finances for carrying out the serial blasts in Mumbai. Yakub had challenged his death sentence on the grounds that while he could be held guilty of conspiracy, he was not involved in executing the blasts that led to death of people. Meanwhile, Yakub received a visit from his cousin at the Jail yesterday on the eve of his hearing.

At least 257 people were killed in 13 blasts that jolted several Mumbai landmarks, including the Bombay Stock Exchange and Air India Building in early 1993. According to Mumbai Police, the bombings were carried out at the behest of prime accused Dawood Ibrahim and Tiger Memon. A special anti-terrorism court had convicted 100 people in the attacks.
