SC to hear TN plea over Cauvery water sharing issue

Supreme Court will hear today a petition filed by Tamil Nadu government over the water sharing of Cauvery river with Karnataka and some other states. A bench comprising Justices Dipak Misra, Amitava Roy and AM Khanwilkar had earlier deferred its direction to constitute Cauvery Management Board and had ordered formation of a high level central technical team. This team led by central water commission chairman G S Jha submitted its report to the apex court yesterday. <br/><br/>The Jha technical committee report says, Tamil Nadu needs163 tmc water for irrigation including 22 tmc for drinking water till May next year. The expected water requirement for Karnataka till May next year is projected as 65.48 tmc in the report. The plight of delta farmers losing Kuruvai crops for the past five years has been noted in the report.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, Karnataka has complied the Supreme Court order asking the state to release 2,000 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu every day for 12 days from October 7 till today.<br/><br/>In Tamil Nadu, more than 15 trains were cancelled today as farmers and political parties resorted to rail blockade strike urging centre to set up Cauvery management Board. Thousands of farmers and leaders belonging to DMK, Congress, Tamil Manila Congress, MDMK and left parties were arrested today for blocking trains.

Thousands of farmers and political leaders were arrested all over Tamil Nadu. In Tiruchirapalli division more than 19 trains were cancelled yesterday and many trains have been cancelled today because of the agitation.
