The Supreme Court will hear today the bail plea of Jailed former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa in disproportionate assets case. A bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu had on Monday posted the case for hearing today. Ms Jayalalithaa, who was denied bail by Karnataka High Court following her conviction and four year sentence in a graft case, had on 9th October moved the Apex Court for bail.
The AIADMK chief challenged the High Court order which had refused her bail. Jayalalithaa has pleaded that she has been sentenced to only four years jail in the case and she is also suffering from various ailments as grounds for her immediate relief.
Meanwhile, a petition has been moved in the Supreme Court seeking a direction to shift Jayalalithaa from Bangalore to Central Prison, Chennai. The petition, filed by a journalist said the transfer of the trial from Tamil Nadu to Karnataka had a specific purpose to see to it that the trial is conducted in a fair and transparent manner.
The petition also raises the Cauvery river water dispute between the two states for transferring her to Chennai jail. The issue is likely to be raised today when the Apex court hears the bail plea of Jayalalithaa.
