The Supreme Court today decided to review the definition of juvenile in the Juvenile Justice Act.
The Apex court also directed the Attorney General to assist the court in the plea challenging the absolute immunity to delinquents up to the age of 18 years from being prosecuted like adults despite the gravity of the crime committed by them.
The court has fixed April 3rd as a next date for deciding on the issue.
AIR Correspondent reports, there has been wide spread demand for lowering the age of juvenile from 18 to 16 in the wake of the involvement of a juvenile in December 16th Delhi gang rape case.
Justice Verma Committee set up to amend the criminal law for a stricter punishment for sexual assault on women, was however against the idea of lowering the age of juveniles.
