The Supreme Court today set aside the practice of instant divorce through triple talaq among Muslims, terming it as unconstitutional, illegal and void. <br/><br/>In a 3:2 majority judgment, the apex court held that triple talaq is against the basic tenets of Quran and hence, is unacceptable. The three judges also said, triple talaq is manifestly arbitrary and violative of the constitution and must be struck down.<br/><br/>While Justices Kurian Joseph, RF Nariman and U U Lalit held triple talaq as violative of the constitution, Chief Justice J.S Khehar and Justice S Abdul Nazeer were in favour of putting the practice on hold for six months and asking the government to come out with a law.<br/><br/>Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the apex court's decision. In a tweet, he termed the judgment as historic and said this judgment grants equality to Muslim women and is a powerful measure for women empowerment. BJP President Amit Shah also hailed the verdict, saying it will herald a new era of dignity and equality for Muslim women.<br/><br/>The All India Muslim Women Personal Law Board and All India Shia Personal Law Board have also welcomed the Supreme Court's judgement. The Women Personal Law Board President, Shaista Amber termed it as a victory of Islam and Muslim women in the country. <br/><br/>The Shia Personal Law Board spokesperson Maulana Yasoob Abbas said, the decision will help end the harassment of Muslim women.<br/><br/>The All India Muslim Personal Law Board General secretary Maulana Wali Rehmani, however, refused to comment, saying that the board will sit together and decide on the future steps in the matter.<br/><br/>Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Colonel Rajyavardhan Rathore expressed satisfaction over the Supreme Court's verdict.<br/>
