The Supreme Court today stayed the Uttarakhand High Court verdict according the status of 'living human entities' to Ganga and Yamuna, two of India's major rivers. A bench of Chief Justice J S Khehar and Justice D Y Chandrachud passed the order on Uttarakhand government's plea against the high court's judgement. <br/><br/>The Uttarakhand High Court, on the 20th of March last, had passed an order saying that rivers Ganga and Yamuna were living entities and Chief Secretary and Advocate General, being the senior officers of the State, were the legal faces to protect the rivers.<br/><br/>The State Government, in its appeal before the apex court said, the rivers flow through four states, so Uttarakhand High Court alone cannot pass such an order declaring that the rivers Ganga and Yamuna were living entities. The apex court also issued notice to petitioner, Mohammad Salim, and others and sought response on the issue.
