The Supreme Court today stayed the SYL Canal Land Transfer of Property Rights Bill passed by Punjab Assembly on March 14 for returning the SYL canal land to farmers. Governor Kaptan Singh Solanki is yet to give his assent to the legislation. Informing this to members of the House in Haryana Assembly, Chief Minister Manohar Lal said that the apex court has declared the SYL case, property.<br/><br/>The court has appointed Punjab Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and Director General of Police receiver of the property, who will be responsible for making the status quo on the land. He said that the SC has prevented Punjab from returning to farmers around 4,000 acres of land acquired for the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) canal. A 5-member Constitution Bench headed by Justice AR Dave ordered status quo on the land until further orders on Haryana's plea today.
