SC stays Nandy arrest for alleged anti-dalit remark; seeks Centre, Raj, Maha, Ch'garh, Bihar stand

The Supreme Court today stayed renowned sociologist Ashis Nandy's arrest in connection with his controversial anti-Dalit remarks.

The apex court directed the police not to arrest the sociologist in connection with the matter.

The court, however, slammed Nandy for making those irresponsible remarks and cautioned him not to make such comments, which hurt some people’s sentiments.

The apex court passed its order in response to Nandy's petition seeking the quashing of all FIRs against him and protection from arrest in connection with the case.

It also issued notices to Rajasthan, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra governments seeking their stand on Nandy’s statements.

Nandy was also grilled by the Rajasthan police in Jaipur in connection with the matter.He, however, issued an apology and clarified that he was only trying to make the point that corruption among Dalits was noticeable but among the rich it wasn't.

After getting relief from the apex court,Nandy aid that he was grateful to the court for relief and said he will be careful about what he speaks now.
