Supreme court has stayed criminal proceedings against Mahendra Singh Dhoni in a case against him for allegedly insulting Hindu religious sentiments. The Special Leave Petition has been filed by Mr. Dhoni, challenging the Karnataka High Court order, which had refused to quash the criminal proceedings pending against him before a trial court in Bengaluru.

It was alleged that the cricketer was portraying himself as Lord Vishnu in an advertisement. The disputed picture was published in April 2013. A Bengaluru trial court took cognisance of complaints and started proceedings against him.
