SC seeks response from Centre & DAE on liability aspect of Koodankulam nuke plant

The Supreme Court has sought a response from the Centre and the Department of Atomic Energy for allegedly exempting the Russian company involved in setting up of Kudankulam nuclear power plant from paying damages in case of an accident.

A bench of justices K S Radhakrishanan and Deepak Misra, which has been hearing various pleas pertaining to environment, safety and security issues of the plant, agreed to look into the liability aspect of the controversial plant and asked the government to file its response within three weeks.

Meanwhile, in Tamil Nadu, prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CRPC were extended by a month within the radius of seven Kilometers around the Koodankulam Nuclear power plant by the Tirunelveli district collector.

Our correspondent reports that with the loading of enriched uranium fuel into nuclear reactor over, the protests have subsided for now.

Still, to avert any untoward incident Tirunelveli district collector issued orders to extend the prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the criminal Procedure Code till 10th of next month. The orders promulgated by the collector will be in force in an area 7 Kms around the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant Project.

Tirunelveli Superintendent of Police said that even though the situation is calm and peaceful now, high security is being provided to the nuclear power plant.
