SC reservation on looking into Nuclear plant safety

The Supreme Court expressed reservation in looking into the safety aspect of all the nuclear plants. The Apex Court said that it would not get into the safety aspect of all nuclear plants in the country and all such concerns could be addressed to respective High Courts. Responding to a Public Interest Litigation, a bench headed by Chief Justice S H Kapadia, however, said that it was not averse to going into the issue of setting up of an independent regulatory body to conduct safety reassessment of all existing and proposed nuclear facilities. The Public Interest Litigation sought the court's direction for halting construction of all proposed nuclear power plants in the country till their proper security assessment is done by an independent body.

The bench asked the petitioners, a group of civil society members, to show that they had earlier approached the concerned authority on the issue, and their grievances were not addressed.
