SC refuses to stay on repairing shrines destroys in 2002 Gujarat riots

The Supreme Court today refused to stay Gujarat High Court order directing state government to repair religious places damaged in 2002 riots.

The Gujarat government told Supreme Court that it would contemplate framing a scheme on the compensation issue.

The state government had approached the Supreme Court asking for a stay on a High Court order to pay compensation.
The Supreme Court had earlier asked the Gujarat government for details of the shrines destroyed in the 2002 riots.

The Court had asked the government to quantify the amount needed to repair the religious sites damaged during the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Around 500 shrines had been destroyed in the 2002 Gujarat riots. The High Court had pulled up the state government for its inaction and negligence, which resulted in the destruction of religious structures.
