SC refuses to entertain PIL seeking to raise the retirement age of its judges

The Supreme Court today refused to entertain a PIL seeking to raise the retirement age of its judges. A bench headed by Chief Justice T S Thakur referred to constitutional provisions on the issue. It said the retirement age of Supreme Court judges has been settled by the Constitution itself and it cannot be looked into.

The plea was filed by a Law Student. It sought from the bench a direction to the Centre over setting up an authority to consider increasing retirement age of the apex court judges. Theses judges presently retire at the age of 65.
