SC quashes contempt proceedings against Biman Basu

In a relief to senior CPI(M) leader Biman Basu, the Supreme Court set aside the three-day sentence imposed on him by the Calcutta High Court for alleged contemptuous remarks made by him in 2003 against a sitting judge. A Bench of Justices B Sudershan Reddy and S S Nijjar, in a judgement, upheld Basu's appeal challenging the 31st March 2005, High Court order holding him guilty of contempt for his remarks against Justice Amitav Lala for imposing restrictions on political demonstrations and rallies. The High Court had sentenced him to three days imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Biman Basu for his remarks.
