The Supreme Court today issued notices to Gujarat Lokayukta Justice (Retd) R.A. Mehta, the Principal Secretary to the State Governor and an NGO on the petition filed by the state government against the State High Court order upholding the appointment of Justice Mehta as state Lokayukta.
A bench comprising Justices B S Chauhan and J S Khehar issued notices after hearing Counsel for State of Gujarat who contended that the action of Governor Kamla Beniwal in appointing Justice Mehta as state Lokayukta without taking the Gujarat government into confidence was illegal.
It amounted to an assault on the federal structure of the Constitution, the Counsel added.
