The Supreme Court has issued notice to U P Chief Secretary Atul Kumar Gupta to showcause why contempt action should not be taken against him for violation of the court order to stop construction work of statues and memorials in Lucknow. <br/><br/>The Apex court asked him to personally appear in court on November four. The court also warned that Central forces can be deployed at the sites if such work continued.<br/><br/>A bench comprising Justices B N Agrawal and Aftab Alam wondered at one stage whether the Chief Secretary can be sent to jail if the construction work is not stopped. Earlier the court had rebuked the state government asking it not to play politics with the court. It observed that violation of its order to stop work on memorials estimated to cost a whopping 2,600 crore rupees seems to have been carried out on instructions from the highest level.<br/><br/>The Congress spokesperson Manish Tiwari said that the apex court has made it clear that the rule of law must be universally accepted. The BJP Spokesperson Rajeev Pratav Ruddy said that the way Mayawati is ruling the state is against the norms of democracy. The Samajwadi Party has sought resignation of state Chief Minister Ms. Mayawati for flouting the Supreme Court orders by continuing with the construction works at parks, memorials and statues.<br/><br/>Meanwhile AIR correspondent reports that all works at construction sites have been halted.<br/>
