SC grants Centre 4-weeks time on government formation in Delhi

The Supreme Court has asked the Centre to apprise it by 10th October of the outcome of political process initiated by Lieutenant Governor on government formation in Delhi.

A five-judge Constitution Bench, headed by Justice H L Dattu, said that it will not keep the matter pending
for long. The Court asked the Centre to inform it of the decision to be taken on the Lieutenant Governor's letter to the President of India.

At the start of the hearing, the Additional Solicitor General referred to the letter written by Lt Governor Najeeb Jung on 4th September to the President seeking to explore the possibility of government formation in Delhi.

In his letter to the President, the Lieutenant Governor had sought permission to call the BJP as the single largest party to form the government.

The Additional Solicitor General said that the political process to explore the possibility of government formation has started again and sought a time of four weeks.
