The Supreme Court has expressed shock at the large number of people languishing in jails in complete violation of their rights despite recommendations for their release by the legal services authority. <br/><br/>A bench comprising Justices Madan B Lokur and Deepak Gupta was hearing a PIL regarding conditions prevailing in prisons across country. <br/><br/>It referred to the figures submitted by National Legal Services Authority, NALSA, and told Attorney General that there were thousands of prisoners who were not released from jails by the states even after being granted bail or completing their sentences. <br/><br/>The Court said, such a situation was unacceptable. The Court posted the matter for hearing on the 31st of this month. It also asked three state – Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh – to file an affidavit in this respect within 10 days, making it clear that no extension of time will be granted.
