SC expresses concern over LoP issue; asks govt to respond by Sep 9

The Supreme Court has told the Centre that it is concerned about the post of the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha remaining vacant. Highlighting the importance of the LoP, the Apex Court said, it conveys the voice different from the government in the House. Posting the case for final disposal for the 9th of next month, the Apex Court said the issue cannot be prolonged and the act cannot be put in cold storage.

The Supreme Court also termed LoP as very important component under the Local law and said it needs objective consideration.

Congress has welcomed the Supreme Court observations on the issue. Party leader Manish Tiwari said, opposition is the essence of democracy.

Janata Dal (United) Chief Sharad Yadav said both the ruling party and the opposition are the voice of people and government must find a solution to this matter.

BJP, on the other hand said, people do not want to give Leader of Opposition post to Congress as they have given only 44 seats to the party in the 543 member house. Party spokesperson Nalin Kohli said, peoples' verdict should be respected in democracy.

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has already rejected the Congress' demand for the post of Leader of the Opposition. She said according to rules, a party is eligible for the post only if it has at least 55 seats in the Lower House.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh has asked the Congress to honour the decision of the Lok Sabh speaker Sumitra Mahajan not to grant the status of Leader of Opposition.
