The Supreme Court has directed completion of trial of Kumbhokonam school fire tragedy in Tamil Nadu in 6 months. 94 children were burnt to death and 18 seriously injured in one of the worst ever fire tragedies 8 years ago. The fire is believed to have started from the kitchen, where the midday meal for nursery children was being prepared and soon spread to a row of thatched-roof classrooms. The Apex Court today directed the trial court in Thanjavur district to complete the entire exercise within 6 months. The apex court passed the order, while dismissing the appeal of a State Education Department official K Balakrishnan, who sought his discharge from the case.
