SC directs Centre to block info on sex determination online in India

The Supreme Court today directed the Centre to constitute a nodal agency to have a tab on all the keywords used on search engines to enable a system of 'auto-block' that would black out information on sex determination online in India.<br/><br/>The division bench told the Centre that certain words which facilitates sex determination should be deleted after 36 hours. The Apex Court set February 17, 2017, for the next hearing. <br/><br/>The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) had sought the court's intervention to urge the government to immediately crackdown on advertisement of sex-determination kits, tools and clinics on websites. <br/><br/>Prenatal sex determination was made illegal in India in 1994 to prevent sex-selective abortions.
