The Supreme Court today commuted the death sentence of two convicts in the 2002 American Center attack case to life imprisonment. The main mastermind in the terror case, Aftab Ahmad Ansari, will remain behind bars till the end of his life. Another convict Jamiluddin Nasir will remain in jail for at least 30 years without remission. A bench of justices A K Patnaik and F M Ibrahim Khalifulla passed the order on appeals filed by Ansari and Nasir challenging the Calcutta High Court order which had confirmed death sentence awarded to them by a trial court.The apex court had in 2010 stayed the death sentence awarded to them.
Six policemen were killed and 14 injured in the attack at the American Center in Kolkata on the 22nd of January 2002.
