Supreme Court has commuted to life imprisonment the capital punishment awarded to three convicts in the 2000 Dharmapuri bus burning case in Tamil Nadu. A bench, headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, said yesterday that the incident had happened in a flash during mob frenzy and it was not pre-meditated. The apex court had earlier stayed the execution of the capital punishment for the convicts on their pleas seeking a review of the apex court's verdict upholding death penalty awarded to them.

The Dharmapuri case relates to the death of three students of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, when the bus they were travelling in along with 44 other students were torched by the three convicts, following the conviction of AIADMK chief Jayalalithaa in a criminal case.
