SC bans tinted glasses in vehicles beyond permissible limit

The Supreme Court has banned the use of tinted glasses in vehicles beyond the permissible limit as specified by the Motor Vehicles Act.

The apex court has asked the state governments to frame guidelines for the use of tinted glasses for security purposes.

The court was delivering verdict on a PIL seeking complete ban on the use of dark films on car windows, including the vehicles used by VVIPs.

The PIL alleged that many crimes in cities were committed by people using tinted car windows. The court had reserved its judgement in the case on Monday.

A bench of Chief Justice S H Kapadia and Justices A K Patnaik and Swatanter Kumar asked the petitioner whether he had any statistics relating to the percentage of crimes committed using cars with tinted windows.
