The Supreme Court has asked the government to explain the delay in taking a decision on the issue of granting sanction to prosecute former Telecom Minister A. Raja in the 2G spectrum allocation scam. A bench of Justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly were hearing on a petition filed by Janata Party President and former Law Minister Subramaniam Swamy, who had sought sanction for the prosecution of Raja.The Bench was categorical that the competent authority should have acted within three months of receiving the complaint of Swamy in accordance with guidelines laid down by the Apex court. The Bench expressed dissatisfaction over the language used by the Prime Minister's office in its reply to the letter concerning the plea seeking prosecution of Raja.The apex court also sought clarification from the government whether a private citizen has the right to seek sanction for prosecution of a public servant for corruption from a competent authority.
