The Supreme Court today asked Union Government to appoint three Information Commissioners in the Central Information Commission (CIC), within next six weeks. A bench comprising Justices J S Khehar and C Nagappan said, it has already granted the time sought by the Centre. The Centre should now appoint the Information Commissioners within this time period.

The bench was hearing Centre's plea filed against a Delhi High Court order. The High court on November 6 last year, had asked the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) to fill up the vacancies in CIC within 6 weeks time.

The high court had observed, the vacancies led to a massive backlog of appeals before the CIC. The CIC comprises a chief commissioner and 10 information commissioners. On last Monday, the Centre appointed Former Defence Secretary R K Mathur as the Chief Information Commissioner in CIC.
