SC asks army to explore possibilities of giving permanent commission to women officers

Serving women army officers today got a shot in the arm with the Supreme Court asking the Government to explore the possibility of giving them permanent commission in other non-combat branches in addition to the legal and educational wings.A Bench comprising Justices J M Panchal and Gyan Sudha Mishra posted the matter for further hearing on November 22. The court asked the government to look into such possibility after counsel appearing for women officers submitted that there are non-combat branches other than Judge Advocate General (JAG) and education in the army in which male officers are given permanent commission.Advocate Meenakshi Lekhi, appearing for the women officers, submitted that they could be absorbed in logistics like Army Service Corp, Army Ordnance Corp, Military Engineering Services, Military Intelligence and Signals which are support arms and non-combat branches.
