The Supreme Court’s (SC) appointed monitoring committee headed by Justice K K Lahoti today took on-the-spot assessment of drinking water supply to gas tragedy affected areas in Bhopal today. The committee will submit its report to the Supreme Court. Justice Lahoti expressed concern over the situation in these localities. The Supreme Court had set a three-month deadline in April this year for the Madhya Pradesh government to ensure supply of clean drinking water to victims of the Bhopal gas leak tragedy living in settlements around the Union Carbide Factory. Several NGO’s have alleged that gas victims have been forced to drink contaminated water for over 28 years. The Apex Court had set up the monitoring committee to oversee the work of providing fresh water by the state government to the gas affected areas near the Union Carbide plant.
