SC accepts Raju Ramachandran's recommendations to ban Khap Panchayats

The Supreme Court has accepted the recommendations of senior counsel Raju Ramachandran to ban Khap Panchayats. Mr Ramachandran was appointed amicus curiae by the Supreme Court and was asked to submit his report on the legality of Khap Panchayats. Publice Interest Litigation filed by an NGO, had urged the apex court to declare Khap Panchayats as illegal. The petitioner said only courts have authority to lay down law in accordance with the constitution of India. Khap Panchayats have been backing honour killings in case of intercaste marriages in the country.
Earlier, in April 2011, the apex Court termed Khap Panchayats as kangaroo courts and declared them illegal.
