SBI raises concerns over farm loan waivers by AP, Telengana govts

The country's largest lender, the State Bank of India, SBI has raised concerns over the proposed farm loan waivers by Andhra Pradesh and Telengana governments. Speaking to reporters after the bank's 59th annual general meeting in Mumbai yesterday, SBI Chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya said that it may mount the already high stress on its agriculture portfolio in the first quarter. The newly-elected chief ministers of Andhra Pradesh and Telengana have recently announced loan waivers running into over one lakh crore rupees.SBI Chief was however optimistic about the overall non-performing loans in the banking sector. She said that the numbers should start looking better with an improvement in the macroeconomic environment and an expected revival in growth.
