In Pakistan, a Saudi diplomat was killed in a shooting near the consulate in Karachi. An official from the Saudi embassy identified the man as a Saudi diplomat. Karachi police named him as Hassan al-Khatani.Police said that the Saudi had been driving a vehicle with diplomatic plates when two motorcycle riders unleashed a hail of gunfire. Inspector General of Sindh Police, Fayyaz Ahmad Leghari said the consulate employee died of multiple bullet wounds on the spot. He said the attackers fled on the motorbike. Reports say, Pakistan's al Qaeda-linked Taliban have claimed responsibility for the killing. Officials said today's attack was the second on Saudi interests in Pakistan's biggest city in less than a week. Meanwhile, the Saudi consulate had been closed for a week following the incident. Saudi Arabia strongly condemned the attack terming it as a criminal attack. State run SPA news agency said, the Saudi foreign ministry is following up investigations with Pakistani security authorities and has demanded strengthening of security at the Saudi consulate in Karachi and the embassy in Islamabad.Saudi Assistant Foreign Minister Prince Khaled bin Saud had urged Pakistani authorities to ensure the protection of the kingdom's diplomatic missions in the country.The attacks came in the wake of the May 2 raid by US special forces in the garrison city of Abbottabad that killed al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
