Saudi Arabia's King on three-day visit to Syria

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah will reach Damascus on Wednesday on a three-day visit to Syria where various issues ranging from Iran to Lebanon and Palestine are likely to be discussed. This will be the Saudi king's first visit to the Syrian capital since 2005, when he came to power. According to Saudi and Syrian officials, the two leaders will discuss the three-month-old deadlock in Lebanon over the formation of a new government, and stalemated reconciliation talks between the two main Palestinian political parties. An understanding between Syria and Saudi Arabia could set the stage for the establishment of a unity government in Lebanon headed by Saad Hariri. A number of Saudi cabinet ministers and a delegation will accompany the King Abdullah. Relations between Syria and Saudi Arabia soured in the wake of the assassination of Lebanon's former Prime Minister, Rafik Hariri, in February 2005.
