Mumbai’s Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik has been tanasfered. He has been promoted to the rank of Director General and posted as Managing Director of Maharashtra State Security Corporation. Satyapal Singh, who served as Additional Director General (Law and Order) has also been promoted to the DG rank and has been appointed as Mumbai’s Police Commissioner. Another IPS officer S P Gupta has been appointed Additional DG (training). Maharashtra’s Home Minister, Mr. R R Patil described the tranasfered as routine. Arup Patnaik had been under fire for mishandling the August 11 violence at Azad Maidan during a rally organised by Raza Academy to protest atrocities in Assam and Myanmar. 17 people have been arrested from various parts of Mumbai in connection with violence . A metropolitan magistrate today remanded all of them in police custody till 29th August. Meanwhile, five more people have been arrested today, taking the total number of arrests so far to 48.
