Sasikala set to be next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu

In Tamil Nadu, the ruling AIADMK General Secretary VK Sasikala is set to be sworn in as the state chief minister in a few days, after the return of Governor Vidyasagar Rao from Delhi. Following the election of Ms VK Sasikala as the AIADMK Legislature party leader yesterday, the incumbent O.Panneerselvam has submitted his resignation to the Governor paving way for Ms Sasikala's take over of the state administration. Mr Panneerselvam has cited personal reasons for his resignation and in separate letters have thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Governor Vidyasagar Rao.

Ms Sasikala has been a long time associate of late chief minister J.Jayalalithaa. She was elevated to the post of party General Secretary on December 29th following the demise of the charismatic leader. In exactly two months of her death, Ms Sasikala has been elected as the AIADMK Legislature Party to lead the cabinet as the third woman chief minister of the state. The other two, Janaki Ramachandran and Jayalalithaa too were from the same party.

Before the MLAs meeting, some senior ministers including chief minister O.Panneerselvam drove to the Poes Garden residence where Ms Sasikala is staying and held detailed discussions about the power shift. Later, in her absence, the MLAs meeting was held. After her election, she also joined and spoke to the MLAs saying she would follow the footsteps of Ms Jayalalithaa. She said the designs of the opposition to divide the party after the demise of Ms Jayalalithaa did not materialise due to unity in the party. She also said Mr Panneerselvam was tjhe first to ask her to took up the m antle of both the party General Secretary post as well as the chief ministership.

The developments in the state politics have elicited mixed reactions. The opposition DMK working president MK Stalin has said it isa betrayal of the people as Ms Sasikala has never been brought into either the party or the Government when Ms Jayalalithaa was alive. The state BJP leader Dr Tamlisai Soundararajan has said Ms Sasikala in no way could be compared with late Jayalalithaa in administrative acumen.

The state Congress chief Su.Thirunavukkarasu has said people would not accept her as the top executive of the state. The CPM leader G.Ramakrishnan has congratulated Ms Sasikala and said she should be true to the aspirations of the public. PMK founder Dr Ramadoss has termed it as a set back for the state politics. Our correspondant reports that Political activities in Tamil Nadu have taken a feverish pitch once again.

The arrival of Governor from Delhi to Chennai is being awaited for the arrangements on taking over of the new Government under Ms VK Sasikala to take a final shape. Ms Sasikala's loyalists claim a single power centre at both the party and government levels would help ensure coherence. It remains to be seen if Ms Sasikala would contest from the RK Nagar constituency in Chennai vacated by late Jayalaithaa to get elected to the Assembly or prefer any other seat.
