In Tamil Nadu, the total literacy according to the available status is 73.47 percent. The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan program has given a significant improvement in the attendance rate of children in both primary and the Upper Primary sections. Four districts including Chennai have a 97 percentage in attendance because of the project.AIR correspondent reports, the broader aim of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan which not only provides useful and relevant elementary education to all children in the age group of 6 to 14 years, bridges the social, regional and gender gaps, with the active participation of the community in the management of schools.To encourage more participation in the scheme, every year students are selected from economically and socially weaker sections from activity learning method schools and are taken for an educational tour. Ms. Kamakshi, district coordinator had this to say on one such tours. The scheme is being implemented along with many partners. They include the Government departments other than school education and also private partners like Microsoft, Intel India and the British Council. Indian Railway Catering and Tourism also joins the goal of providing space for educational activities.
