French President Nicolas Sarkozy has fully supported India's claim for a permanent seat in the UN Security Council. He said, it is unthinkable to keep a country of over one billion out of the Security Council. Sarkozy said, one cannot stand still if India wants to move ahead in 21st century. The French President was addressing scientists at the Indian Space Research Organisation in Bangalore yesterday soon after his arrival on a 4-day visit to India. Sarkozy also supported India's civil nuclear programme and New Delhi's entry in to Nuclear Suppliers Group – NSG. He said, there is need to put an end to nuclear isolation of India. He felt it was injustice done to India by challenging its right to access to civil nuclear energy. India is now going to be a full-fledged member of the multilateral groups overseeing non-proliferation regimes and France will support India's application for candidacy of NSG. He was happy that a French company Areva will be setting up nuclear plant at Jaitapur in Maharashtra that will produce 10,000 MW of non-polluting energy. Sarkozy also said that terrorism emanating from Pakistan and Afghanistan is a major source of instability in the world. Condemning the 26/11 attacks, he said any such strike on India is an attack on democracy and all democracies stand by India. Praising India's role in Afghanistan, the French President said the world cannot afford to lose the war against Taliban. Speaking about Indo-French ties, Sarkozy said that his country has been a good friend of India. Both the countries mean what they say. Showering praise on Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, he said the Indian leader was obsessed with peace through development and eradication of poverty. India's challenge is that if it succeeds through peace, it will have a huge knock-out effect on the world. He said, India and France are united by common values and believe that international relations should not be governed by brutality or force. It should be based on dialogue and rule of law. Sarkozy said, relationship between the two countries should go much further. Appreciating India's growth, Sarkozy said its voice has to be heard at the global level. On education sector, he expects a three-fold growth in the number of Indian students going to France. The French President and his wife Carla Bruni visited Taj Mahal yesterday. They flew from Bangalore to Agra.French President Nicolas Sarkozy will reach Delhi this evening. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh will host a dinner for the visiting dignitaries at his residence. Mr Sarkozy will hold delegation level talks with Dr. Singh on a number of issues tomorrow.
