Sarita Devi apologises; Boxing India to appeal against suspension

The Sports Ministry on Monday asked the newly formed Boxing India to work towards revocation of provisional suspension imposed by AIBA on L. Sarita Devi and three ringside coaches by helping them in filing their replies to the world body. Sarita has been provisionally suspended for refusing to accept her bronze medal owing to a controversial semifinal loss at Incheon Asian Games. The suspension has jeopardised her chances of participating in the World Championships from November 19th of next month in Jeju Islands, Korea. Three ringside coaches – Gurbakhsh Singh Sandhu, Blas Iglesias Fernandez and Sagar Mal Dhayal – were also provisionally suspended from taking part at all levels of competitions and meetings until further notice. Meanwhile, Sarita Devi on Monday apologised for the act. In her letter to the AIBA, the 32-year-old Manipuri boxer tendered her sincere apology for the incidents on September 30 and October 1. She said that the incidents should not have happened and expressed deep regrets with a pledge that these will never happen again.
