Sardarpura massacre: Guj court likely to give verdict

In Gujarat, the special court in Mehsana is likely to pronounce its verdict on the Sardarpura massacre, a post-Godhra riot case.33 persons were killed when a violent mob burnt them alive in a locked house in Sardarpura village in Vijapur block of Mehsana district on 1st March 2002 after the Godhra carnage.AIR Ahmedabad Correspondent reports that 73 persons were tried by designated judge Ms. S. C. Srivastava for charges of murder, conspiracy and rioting.The case was earlier probed by the local police, but following the Supreme Court order in 2008, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by retired CBI chief R K Raghavan took over the probe.65 accused in this case were granted bail by various courts, while eight are languishing in jail. During the trial, the prosecution examined 112 witnesses.Strict security arrangements have been made in Mehsana as a precautionary measure.
