'Sarbananda Sonowal to be sworn in as Assam CM today

Senior BJP leader and former Union minister Sarbanand Sonowal will take oath as the new Chief Minister this evening at Khanapara in Guwahati. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President Amit Shah, several Chief Ministers and Union ministers and spiritual leaders are expected to witness the swearing ceremony. It will be for the first time after 1985, when a Chief Minister will take oath in an open field. All arrangements have been made by the administration to smoothly conduct the swearing in ceremony. <br/><br/>Meanwhile, the BJP led new government has vowed to adopt zero tolerance towards corruption. Participating in AIR talk show in Guwahati last night, BJP Spokesperson Hiten Goswami stressed that new government would work to bring full transparency in service delivery system. The BJP and its allies Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People's Front scored a massive victory bagging 86 seats in the 126 member Assam assembly. <br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports that Mr. Sonowal, who became state BJP President in 2013 for the first time, started his political career in 2001 by becoming the member of Assam assembly in Asom Gana Parishad ticket. In 2004, he became Lok Sabha member for the first time by defeating Congress strongman Pawan Singh Ghatowar from Dibrugarh constituency.<br/><br/>Prior to his political stint, Mr Sonowal was the President of All Assam Students' Union from 1992 to 1999. In last Lok Sabha polls, the BJP got 7 seats in Assam when Mr Sonowal was in-charge of the state party unit. The party again made him state President last year.
