Central Bureau of Investigation, CBI has arrested West Bengal Transport Minister Madan Mitra in connection with multi crore Saradha chit fund scam. CBI sources said, Mitra has been arrested on prima facie evidence of criminal conspiracy, cheating, misappropriation and deriving undue financial benefits from the group.

Mr. Mitra a close confidante of the West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee was arrested after hours of interrogation in Kolkata today. Meanwhile a city court in Kolkata today extended till 22nd of this month the judicial custody of suspended Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh, Sudipta Sen and Debjani Mukherjee in the Saradha case.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that the arrest of State Transport Madan Mitra is illegal and unconstitutional. Reacting angrily she said that she will visit Madan Mitra and dared the centre to arrest her. Miss Banerjee said Madan Mitra submitted his resignation letter, but she will not accept it because Mitra's arrest is illegal and it is a conspiracy. She alleged that the BJP government at the Centre is acting like an 'autocrat'.

BJP today demanded resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee after the arrest of Transport Minister Madan Mitra . Talking to AIR, party Secretary Sidharth Nath Singh said that since Mr. Mitra is a close confidante of the Chief Minister, she can not escape the responsibility. He also rejected Ms. Banerjee's allegation that the arrest is a part of political vendetta against her party saying it was the Supreme Court which ordered CBI investigation in the scam and not the BJP.

CPI(M) today demanded that CBI should question West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the Saradha Chit fund scam. Talking to AIR, party leader Brinda Karat said that the arrest of Transport Minister Madan Mitra, a close confidante of Ms Banerjee, proves that the irregularities took place with the consent of Chief Minister. Ms. Karat alleged that TMC government has lost all credibility.
