In West Bengal, suspended Trinamool Congress MP Kunal Ghosh was admitted to a hospital in Kolkata this morning after he tried to commit suicide in jail. Additional Director General, Prisons, Adhir Sharma told AIR correspondent that Ghosh had attempted to commit suicide by swallowing sedative pills.
He said, Ghosh was shifted to the hospital from Presidency Correctional Home where his condition is stated to be stable now. A suicide note and sleeping pills were also recovered from his cell in the jail. Ghosh was arrested in connection with the Saradha Chit Fund scam last year.
He threatened to commit suicide when he was produced before the special CBI court probing the scam in Kolkata last Monday demanding immediate arrest of those who were involved in the scam.
Meanwhile, the Enforcement Directorate yesterday questioned three officials of the Indian Railway Tour and Catering Corporation on their agreement with the Sarda tour and travel.
After the suicide attempt by Ghosh, the West Bengal government suspended three officials of the Presidency Correctional Home on charges of negligence of duties. Announcing this in the state assembly today, Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee said that an inquiry committee has been set up under the Chairmanship of the Home Secretary Basudev Banerjee to probe the whole matter.
She said that Superintendent of correctional Home, Doctor and Nurse on duty have been placed under suspension till inquiry on the case is over. Ms. Banerjee said that all the health parameters of Ghosh are normal now. She criticized the opposition for politicizing the issue.
Ghosh was arrested in connection with Sardha Chit Fund scam last year. The CBI which is probing the scam, is inquiring from the jail authorities, how the sleeping pills reached him. A spokesman of the CBI said that they will inform the court on the matter also. Ghosh had threatened to commit suicide when he was produced before the CBI court last Monday, demanding immediate arrest of others involved in the case.
BJP has demanded a CBI probe into the suicide attempt by suspended Trinamool Congress MP, Kunal Ghosh. In a statement, party Secretary Siddharth Nath Singh said that the state administration should ensure a secure custody of Kunal Ghosh, who is a prime witness in Saradha scam. He questioned the approach of Jail authorities over the security of Mr. Ghosh and suspected conspiracy in the incident.
